THE INNOVATIVE ASPECT
OF THE PROJECT

to develop an integrated chemical analytical-epidemiological approach to improve the capacity to identify and assess the NPS mostly spreading in Europe.
Innovative analytical chemical methods and epidemiological methods and a robust risk assessment will be used to improve NPS identification, to assess risks, and to estimate extent and pattern of use in specific groups and in the general population
ABOUT PROJECT
The project intends to develop an integrated approach to improve the capacity to identify and assess the NPS mostly spreading in Europe, and to estimate their extent and pattern of use in Europe
The project will apply an innovative approach based on the triangulation of analytical chemistry methodologies integrated with an epidemiological approach and a risk assessment to improve the capacity to identify and assess the NPS spreading in Europe and to describe their extent and pattern of use in specific groups of individuals and in the general population.
The implementation of this approach will identify the mostly diffused and harmful NPS not yet controlled and will provide information useful to adopt decisions for putting these substances under control within the EU.
TARGET GROUPS
Specific groups, such as music festival patrons
The urine analysis and surveys focused on these groups can provide evidence of new substances in use, and the general population, where wastewater analysis can provide information of extent and pattern of use of these substances in Member States.
EXPECTED RESULTS
- Improved knowledge on NPS, and on the methods to identify them and assess risks.
- Identification and description of novel NPS to be included in the EWS database.
- Knowledge on the extent and pattern of use of NPS in different EU countries.
THE NETWORK
The objective of the Project will be pursued by an extended collaborative network, which includes Universities, and private and national research centers
